Some poems leave behind a color.

Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, Wearingeul The Raven is a dark violet fountain pen ink drawn from one of Gothic literature’s most enduring poems. At first glance it approaches near-black, but the underlying violet emerges as the ink moves across the page and catches the light.

The color suits its literary source particularly well: somber without being simply black, atmospheric without becoming theatrical. In heavier applications, the violet becomes considerably more apparent, while ordinary handwriting preserves a darker, quieter character.

Produced by Wearingeul as part of its World Literature Ink Collection, The Raven translates Poe’s poem into an ink meant not merely to reference the work, but to return it to the written page.

From the Archivist’s Desk

What makes The Raven interesting is the tension between what the ink appears to be at first and what it reveals upon closer examination. On the page, its darkness can initially suggest black; in broader or wetter areas, the violet beneath it becomes much easier to see.

That makes it particularly appropriate for an ink named after Poe’s raven. The color does not announce itself immediately. It rewards looking twice.

Ink Swatch Note

The ink swatch shown here was made by Boston Lore Studio on Tomoe River 68 gsm paper. Ink color can vary with paper, pen, nib, ink concentration, photography, display settings, and lighting conditions. Our swatches are photographed under natural light, which changes throughout the day, so the color you see on screen may differ from its appearance in person.
