Six colors gathered from the field, the river and the old rooftops of Hungary.

Pennonia makes its inks by hand in small batches, and its shading inks are among the most beautiful we have written with: colors that split and shift as they dry, so a single line holds two or three tones. This Boston Lore Studio set gathers six of them into 3 mL glass vials, presented in a gift box with an illustrated card for each ink.

Four dual-shading Hungarian inks — Patina, Lichen, Lilac and Danube — joined by two vivid companions, Ragi and Róka Koma, for contrast. The companions are there for warmth: a soft coral and a fox orange that make the cooler shading inks sing on the page.

The Six Inks

  • Patina (shading) — the green-blue of weathered copper on old rooftops; a soft teal that deepens where it pools.
  • Lichen / Zuzmó (multichromatic shading) — quiet growth on stone and bark, the kind Thoreau noticed on his walks; pale leafy green that pools into putty and bronze.
  • Lilac / Orgona (dual-shading) — a spring blossom of memory and longing; pastel lilac that shades into lavender and blue.
  • Danube / Danuvius (multichromatic shading) — named for the great river that runs through Hungary; pastel blue that gives way to violet and pink on many papers.
  • Ragi (vivid companion) — Hungarian for bubble gum, the field notebook's playful page; a soft peach-coral with gentle shading.
  • Róka Koma / Fox Friend (vivid companion) — "Brother Fox" of Hungarian folk tales, glimpsed at the edge of the field; a bright orange-red.

A Thoughtful Gift

Each set arrives in a gift box lined with tissue, with an illustrated card describing every ink. It is a ready-made present for a fountain pen friend, a letter writer or a journal keeper, and an easy way to try a whole palette of Pennonia before choosing a full bottle.

Best in Broad or Wet Nibs

Pennonia inks are light and delicate. Best in medium-broad or wet nibs, where the shading really shows. In very fine nibs, the softer colors such as Lilac and Lichen can read pale.

A Note from the Archive

These samples are independently decanted and packaged by Boston Lore Studio from authentic Pennonia bottles. The full bottles in the photos are shown for reference and are not included. Color and shading will vary with your pen, paper, and light. Sets are made in small batches.
