Shading inks reward patience. Their character shows over pages, not swatches: the way a word darkens at its edges, or a line splits into two colors as it dries. This Boston Lore Studio set gathers six Pennonia inks into 5 mL glass vials, enough to keep a pen filled with each color for weeks, presented in a gift box with an illustrated card for each ink.
Four dual-shading Hungarian inks — Patina, Lichen, Lilac and Danube — joined by two vivid companions, Ragi and Róka Koma, for contrast. The companions bring warmth, a soft coral and a fox orange beside the cooler shading inks.
The Six Inks
- Patina (shading) — soft teal that deepens where it pools, like weathered copper.
- Lichen / Zuzmó (multichromatic shading) — pale leafy green that separates into putty and bronze.
- Lilac / Orgona (dual-shading) — pastel lilac shading into lavender and blue.
- Danube / Danuvius (multichromatic shading) — pastel blue giving way to violet and pink on many papers.
- Ragi (vivid companion) — Hungarian for bubble gum; a soft peach-coral with gentle shading.
- Róka Koma / Fox Friend (vivid companion) — the "Brother Fox" of Hungarian folk tales; a bright orange-red.
Why 5 mL
Five milliliters gives each ink several full fills, so you can live with a color across different pens, papers and days. It suits writers who keep more than one pen inked, or anyone who wants to see how these inks behave in letters and journals, not just on a swatch card.
Best in Broad or Wet Nibs
Pennonia inks are light and delicate. Best in medium-broad or wet nibs, where the shading really shows. In very fine nibs, the softer colors such as Lilac and Lichen can read pale.

These samples are independently decanted and packaged by Boston Lore Studio from authentic Pennonia bottles. The full bottles in the photos are shown for reference and are not included. Color and shading will vary with your pen, paper, and light. Sets are made in small batches.
