The warm glow of an old copper coin.

Copper darkens with age, from a bright new penny to the deep, reddish brown of something long handled and well kept. Diamine's Ancient Copper takes its name from that weathered metal, and it has become one of the best-loved red-browns among fountain pen writers.

On the page it is a warm red-brown, lighter and redder where the line is thin and deeper where the ink gathers. Its shading is the reason many writers keep a bottle close: every word carries a little light and shadow. On smooth papers such as Tomoe River, it can show a dark sheen where it pools. The generous 80 mL bottle comes from Diamine of Liverpool, England, who have been making ink since 1864.

Shading shows best with a medium or broader nib. It is not water-resistant, so keep it for letters and journals rather than envelopes that may meet the rain. Explore more of the range in our Diamine inks.
